Dan Burn expressed regret following the injury sustained by England midfielder Jordan Henderson during the World Cup Round of 16 match against Mexico. Henderson suffered a broken wrist and arm after attempting to vault over advertising hoardings, an action he tried to emulate from Burn, who completed the jump without incident. The injury required surgery, ruling the 36-year-old midfielder out for the remainder of the tournament.
Burn, a 6-foot-7 defender for Newcastle United, spoke to talkSPORT about the incident. He acknowledged feeling responsible, saying he made the jump look easy and heard Henderson’s fall immediately afterward. "You know with Hendo if he doesn’t get up, there’s something wrong," Burn said. Despite his disappointment over Henderson’s injury, Burn noted that the midfielder will remain part of the team’s support group at the team hotel.
Looking ahead, Burn is focused on England’s upcoming quarter-final match against Norway, scheduled for tomorrow. He highlighted his personal record against Norwegian forward Erling Haaland, noting that Haaland has scored only once in their six encounters. Burn emphasized the need for a stronger performance compared to their previous match, saying, "We’re going to have to put in a much better performance than we did against Mexico to get through."
England secured a 3-2 victory over Mexico in the last 16, advancing to the quarters where they will face Norway. The team will aim to maintain momentum despite the loss of an experienced player in Henderson.
