Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Beth Israel Lahey Health officially began construction on a new $1.68 billion cancer hospital in Boston on Monday. The facility, designed as the only dedicated cancer hospital in New England, will be located on the Longwood Medical and Academic Area.

The hospital will feature 300 inpatient beds within a 450,000-square-foot building and is scheduled to open in 2031. It aims to provide comprehensive care for cancer patients requiring inpatient treatment during their therapies.

The project marks a significant shift in Dana-Farber’s affiliations, as it will operate separately from its longtime partner, Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The upcoming separation reflects changing dynamics in local healthcare partnerships.

Dr. Benjamin Ebert, Dana-Farber's chief executive, emphasized the hospital’s potential impact, noting the extensive discussions around the facility’s capabilities and the motivation inspired by seeing construction underway. He highlighted the focused environment the new hospital will provide for cancer care.

The collaboration between Dana-Farber and Beth Israel Lahey Health on this venture underscores a growing trend of specialized treatment centers aiming to improve patient outcomes through dedicated facilities. The hospital is expected to serve patients across Massachusetts and the broader New England region upon completion.
