Jayden Daniels’s left elbow injury during Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys has cast uncertainty over the Washington Commanders’ season. Daniels suffered a dislocated left elbow — the same injury he endured last November — in the first half of the 37-20 loss in Arlington, Texas.

The injury occurred late in the second quarter after Daniels took a snap and appeared to lose balance when left guard Chris Paul stepped on his left foot. In an attempt to break his fall, Daniels extended his left arm awkwardly, resulting in the dislocation. He was immediately attended to by trainers and teammates before being carted off the field with his arm in a sling and later transferred from the stadium.

Washington head coach Dan Quinn confirmed that X-rays showed no fractures, but additional tests are required to determine if there is ligament damage. Quinn expressed optimism that Daniels could return this season, but the timeline depends on whether surgery is necessary.

Daniels was replaced by backup quarterback Marcus Mariota at halftime. Despite his injury, Daniels had been a key part of a second-quarter rally, leading scoring drives that narrowed Dallas’s lead after a rough start in which the Commanders fell behind 10-0. The third-year quarterback completed 96 passing yards with one touchdown and rushed seven times for 69 yards before exiting the game. Washington’s offensive strategy this season has aimed to limit Daniels’s rushing to reduce injury risk, but his mobility proved instrumental in the drive preceding the injury.

The Cowboys, led by quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, capitalized on the Commanders’ misfortunes, adding 20 points in the second half and ultimately sealing the 37-20 victory. Washington managed to close the gap to four points early in the third quarter but could not sustain the momentum. The Commanders also faced setbacks with a costly fumble by wide receiver Dyami Brown and a missed 51-yard field goal attempt by kicker Drew Stevens.

This marks Daniels’s second dislocation of the left elbow within 10 months, raising concerns given that he played only seven games last season, completing just four. The 2026 season started with hope following a series of offseason changes, including new coordinators and roster additions, and a focus on more rigorous training. But Daniels’s injury after just six quarters threatens to derail the team’s progress.

Teammates expressed emotional support following the injury. Running back Rachaad White, who played with Daniels in college, described the moment as heartbreaking, while wide receiver Terry McLaurin said the injury “took the air out of us a little bit,” reflecting the difficulty of regrouping without their starting quarterback.

With Daniels’s status still uncertain, the Commanders face a challenging path forward as they adjust to his absence and look to maintain competitiveness in the upcoming weeks.
