Danish Iftikhar Mohd Roslee advanced to the men’s 200-meter final at the Asian Games on Saturday after posting a season-best time in the semi-finals at Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium. The 19-year-old sprinter from Johor recorded a time of 20.76 seconds in the first semi-final heat, finishing fourth and securing a place among the top eight finalists.

Danish’s performance marked an improvement over his previous results in the competition, where he ran 21.04 seconds in the heats and slightly bettered his season's best of 20.83 seconds, set earlier at the Malaysian Games (Sukma). He currently holds the Malaysian national record at 20.73 seconds, and with consistent improvement through each round, there is potential for him to surpass his own national mark in the final.

Out of 24 competitors across three semi-final heats, Danish’s time ranked sixth overall, comfortably qualifying him for the final. Fellow Malaysian sprinter Mohd Haziq Mohd Akhir was unable to advance after finishing eighth in the third semi-final heat with a time of 21.50 seconds.

In Danish’s semifinal heat, Japan’s Soshi Mizukubo claimed first place with a time of 20.37 seconds, followed by Taiwan’s Ke Wu Yen-ming in 20.71 seconds and Hong Kong’s Yip King Wai in 20.74 seconds.

In a separate semi-final, Thailand’s Puripol Boonson delivered a standout performance by setting a new Asian Games record with a time of 20.10 seconds. Notably, Puripol appeared to slow down near the finish line, confidently securing victory while still breaking the previous Games record. The 20-year-old’s performance positions him as a serious contender in the final and opens the possibility of challenging the longstanding Asian record of 19.88 seconds held by China’s Xie Zhenye since 2019.

Both Puripol and Danish are emerging as leading sprinters from Southeast Asia and are expected to contend for the top positions in the final, which is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Danish will run from lane three, while Puripol is assigned lane eight.
