Danny Newton’s standout performance helped Alvechurch secure a coveted FA Cup fixture against League One side Plymouth Argyle. Newton, currently on a month-long loan from Harborough Town, scored twice and assisted another goal in Alvechurch’s fourth qualifying round replay victory over Spalding United on Tuesday, effectively propelling the Step 3 club into the first round proper.

The 31-year-old forward, who has previously played for Stevenage, Tamworth, Solihull Moors, and Brackley Town, has found renewed form under Alvechurch manager Kyle Storer, a former teammate and captain from Solihull Moors. Newton described his spell at Alvechurch as a perfect opportunity to rediscover his passion for football after a challenging start to the season.

His loan term, however, is set to expire two days before Alvechurch’s scheduled trip to Devon to face Plymouth Argyle. Despite this, changes to FA Cup regulations introduced last season mean Newton could technically feature for his parent club, Harborough Town, who also face a League One opponent, Leyton Orient, in their own FA Cup tie. Nevertheless, Newton expressed a strong desire to appear for Alvechurch in their upcoming match, highlighting the importance of his ongoing role with the club.

“I am loving it,” Newton said of his current spell. “Everyone wants to feel loved playing football. I’ve known the manager for a long time, and he knows what I will give. I’ve been fully fit all season and worked really hard in the summer to go back into National North. Last season was the fittest I have felt in my career. I went back to Harborough towards the end, won the league, and went into the new season thinking I was going to play. They made some signings, and I was left out. It is one of those things—that’s football. I stayed fit and ready to go, and the gaffer at Alvechurch knows me inside out. It was the perfect fit for me to get back to loving playing football again.”

Newton’s contributions have been vital in Alvechurch’s FA Cup progress, providing the club with an opportunity to test themselves against higher-tier opposition. The upcoming fixture against Plymouth Argyle will mark a significant occasion for the Southern League Premier Central side as they continue their cup run into the tournament’s first round proper.
