Fylde Football Club has transferred promising forward Danny Ormerod to Peterborough United, a move that marks a significant milestone for the Lancashire-based club. The 20-year-old striker secured a deal that reportedly included a substantial initial fee alongside future sell-on clauses, after Fylde initially rejected offers in the region of £500,000.
Ormerod progressed through Fylde’s academy and first-team ranks, with a notable loan spell at Chorley, where he scored four goals in five matches, helping to attract attention from higher-tier clubs. His development continued under Fylde manager Gary Mahon, who took charge last summer and led the club to promotion in his first season. Mahon praised Ormerod’s professionalism and determination, highlighting the player’s resilience amid growing transfer speculation and a recent injury.
“Danny never gave up on his hunger to be the best on the pitch,” Mahon said. “From pre-season through the start of this season, he’s continued to work hard and deliver. It’s unfortunate losing such a key player, but that’s part of football.”
Mahon described his initial impressions of Ormerod as a lanky, unproven talent who matured physically and mentally. Rather than rushing him into the first team, Mahon eased Ormerod in, allowing him to develop confidence and work rate. A defining moment came early last season when Ormerod scored twice despite Fylde playing with ten men, signaling his readiness for higher challenges.
Ormerod becomes the latest in a series of players moving from non-league sides to professional clubs via Peterborough United, a club noted for fostering and advancing young players from lower divisions. Recent examples include Kyrell Lisbie, who made a similar step up before transferring to Millwall.
Mahon emphasized that while Peterborough offers an excellent environment for further growth, Ormerod must continue to work hard and earn his place at the League One club. He also used Ormerod’s ascent as motivation for Fylde’s remaining squad, urging younger players to seize opportunities.
“Last year Danny wasn’t even our main striker; now he’s playing in League One,” Mahon said. “It shows the chance is there for anyone willing to take it and give everything. We want to produce more success stories like his.”
