Dansby Swanson played a pivotal role in the Chicago Cubs’ sweep of the New York Mets, delivering a record-setting performance in Tuesday’s doubleheader at Citi Field. Swanson finished the day with 11 RBIs, surpassing the previous franchise record of 10 RBIs in a doubleheader set by Ron Santo in 1970.
In the opener, Swanson’s offensive display included a three-run homer and a grand slam, contributing to a 10-3 victory for the Cubs. He continued his strong run with a go-ahead RBI triple in the nightcap, where Chicago secured a 10-5 win to complete the sweep. Overall, Swanson amassed four RBIs in the second game and has now hit three home runs and driven in 15 runs over the first three games of the series. This surge stands in stark contrast to his prior production, as he had just 14 RBIs over his previous 48 games.
Supporting the Cubs’ offense in the second game was Pedro Ramirez, who drove in two runs. On the mound, starter Shota Imanaga (5-6) allowed four runs across 5⅔ innings.
The Mets, in contrast, struggled both offensively and defensively. Although Francisco Lindor returned from the injured list for the nightcap, New York played without star outfielder Juan Soto, who remains sidelined with back issues. The loss extended the Mets’ losing streak to five games and dropped their record to 12 games below .500, marking a season low.
Defensive lapses were a significant factor in the Mets’ defeat in the second game. The team committed six errors, including two each by first baseman Mark Vientos and second baseman Marcus Semien, as well as errors by third baseman Bo Bichette and shortstop Francisco Lindor. These miscues contributed to Chicago’s offensive outburst and ultimately sealed the Cubs’ sweep.
