Darby Racing aims to continue its recent string of successes with the debut of Steel Strike, a promising thoroughbred purchased online for $45,000. The horse will make his first appearance under Darby Racing’s banner in the Benchmark 72 Ranvet Handicap (1250m), with trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott overseeing his preparation.
Steel Strike, a gelding by Exceed And Excel, showed early promise as a two-year-old. He secured a maiden victory at Canterbury in only his second start, followed by a runner-up finish in the Listed Tatt’s Stakes at Eagle Farm, narrowly beaten by Depth Of Character in June 2024. After an unplaced three-year-old campaign and an extended spell, Steel Strike returned with three consecutive third-place finishes as a colt before being gelded upon Adrian Bott’s recommendation. The gelding is now poised for a fresh start as a Saturday metro competitor.
Loren Wadsworth, racing manager for Darby Racing, expressed confidence in Steel Strike’s potential, citing the horse’s early form at a high level as a positive sign for his progression through the racing grades. “We are really excited to see what Gai and Adrian can do with him,” Wadsworth said, noting that the trainers have prepared the horse well for his first run back this season. Adrian Bott has suggested Steel Strike may perform better over longer distances as the campaign progresses.
Darby Racing has established a track record of success by acquiring proven horses and quickly attaining race wins. Recent achievements include Thebudgiesmugla, a former New Zealand gelding who won the Winter Cup at Rosehill on June 13 and followed up with victory in the Caloundra Cup last Saturday. Another standout is Polyglot, a former Godolphin gelding who secured a gutsy win at Rosehill in only his second start for Darby Racing and their clients. Caballus, purchased online late last year, has been particularly prolific, capturing six races including the prestigious Group 1 Newmarket Handicap in March.
In a tactical decision, Darby Racing withdrew Celebrity from the upcoming meeting to save the horse for a Randwick race on Saturday, considering the larger circuit better suited to his running style. Wadsworth explained the choice was made to maximize the horse’s performance potential.
As Steel Strike prepares to step onto the track, Darby Racing hopes to add another immediate success story to its growing list of accomplished runners.
