Darlington Football Club announced the departure of manager Steve Watson on Monday evening, with assistant Terry Mitchell stepping in as interim manager. Watson, a former professional player with Newcastle United, Everton, and Aston Villa, took charge of the Quakers midway through the 2023-24 season.
During his nearly three-year tenure, Watson helped steer Darlington away from relegation in the National League North and secured two mid-table finishes in subsequent seasons. The team was also competitive for a play-off position late last season but ultimately finished four points short of the top seven.
However, the club’s fortunes have declined this season amid the loss of key players and injury setbacks. Forward Cedric Main departed for AFC Fylde while Jack Maskell joined Barnet, further weakening the squad. After a 2-1 defeat at AFC Telford United on Saturday, Darlington sits second from bottom in the league standings, just above regional rivals Spennymoor Town.
The club’s statement said the decision for Watson’s departure was made by mutual agreement following recent discussions. It expressed appreciation for his leadership and dedication and underlined the need for new managerial direction to advance the club’s ambitions.
Mitchell will oversee team affairs on an interim basis as the board moves to identify a permanent replacement. The club wished Watson success in his future endeavors.
