Dartford secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Wingate & Finchley on Saturday, with Louie Atkins scoring the decisive goal in the 82nd minute. The result marked Dartford’s return to winning form in a closely contested match.
The opening stages saw both teams creating chances. Max Fiddes struck the woodwork for Dartford in the sixth minute, while Ashley Nzala’s effort for Wingate & Finchley narrowly missed the target three minutes later. Wingate & Finchley’s Anointed Chukwu also tested Dartford goalkeeper Ryan Sandford, who made a key save early on.
Dartford broke the deadlock in the 19th minute when Ben Greenhalgh converted a tap-in, giving the hosts an early advantage. Later, Charlie Grainger denied George Whitefield with a save from a strong header in the 27th minute. Max Fiddes found the net before halftime, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Sandford kept Dartford ahead by blocking Nzala’s attempt at the end of the first half.
Wingate & Finchley responded shortly after the interval when Chukwu scored in the 55th minute to level the score. Both sides pushed hard for a winner in the remainder of the match. Atkins, coming off the bench for Dartford, netted his first league goal of the season just five minutes after entering, restoring the hosts’ lead.
The visitors’ efforts to equalize were further hampered late in the game when Dartford captain Jack Thomas received a red card deep into stoppage time, ending any chance of a comeback.
With the win, Dartford moved up to joint second place in the league standings, level on points and goal difference with Enfield and Welling but behind on goal difference.
