Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports, criticized the United States Men’s National Soccer Team (USMNT) following their 4-1 loss to Belgium in a World Cup match held Monday night in Seattle. In a video posted on the social media platform X shortly after the final whistle, Portnoy expressed strong dissatisfaction with the team’s performance.

Describing the USMNT’s effort as “embarrassing” and “pathetic,” Portnoy conveyed frustration over what he viewed as an inadequate showing on one of soccer’s biggest stages. He suggested that the intensity and atmosphere of the match were overwhelming for the American players. At one point during his rant, he removed his USA soccer hat and jersey in a gesture of disappointment.

Portnoy further argued that if U.S. soccer intends to maintain a competitive presence in international tournaments, there may need to be significant changes to the player selection process. He referenced recent controversy surrounding World Cup officiating, during which U.S. officials successfully lobbied FIFA to overturn a one-game suspension for forward Folarin Balogun. Portnoy implied that such incidents could provoke diplomatic tensions and labeled the United States as “angry Americans” on the global stage.

In this context, he proposed instituting a mandatory draft system for American soccer, suggesting that prominent athletes from other sports might be compelled to join in order to boost competitiveness. Portnoy specifically mentioned NBA star LeBron James as an example, indicating that even high-profile players outside of traditional soccer circles could be called upon.

The outspoken commentary reflects ongoing scrutiny of the USMNT’s ability to perform consistently at elite levels, especially in light of recent World Cup results. While some view Portnoy’s remarks as harsh, they underscore broader conversations about the development and support of soccer in the United States.
