David Mitchell, the British comedian and actor known for his work on series such as “Peep Show” and “That Mitchell and Webb Look,” has returned to television screens this week with the second season of the mystery-comedy series “Ludwig” on BritBox. The show, which blends elements of comedy, mystery, and drama, originally premiered last spring and has since attracted a dedicated following.
In “Ludwig,” Mitchell plays John Taylor, an introverted crossword puzzle creator who is drawn out of his comfort zone when he is asked to impersonate his missing twin brother, James, a police detective. His sister-in-law, portrayed by Anna Maxwell Martin, enlists John to take on James’s identity in an effort to uncover the circumstances surrounding his disappearance. The first season followed John’s struggle to adapt to a detective’s role despite his social awkwardness, relying on his unique problem-solving skills.
This new season continues to explore John’s journey after his ruse is exposed, with him now working as a police consultant while pursuing the mystery of his brother’s disappearance. Mitchell describes his character as someone who gains confidence only in the process of solving puzzles and investigations but quickly retreats into his reserved nature once a case concludes.
At 52, Mitchell remains a familiar figure in British comedy, though he has a more limited profile in the United States outside niche audiences that appreciate British humor. He has also been a regular on panel shows such as “Would I Lie to You?,” where he has been a team captain since the show’s inception in 2007, and has taken roles that often feature intellectual or curmudgeonly personas, such as his portrayal of William Shakespeare in the historical comedy “Upstart Crow.”
Speaking via Zoom from London, Mitchell reflected on his enduring affection for television and the opportunity to explore different genres through his role in “Ludwig,” which allows him to blend comedic elements with a more serious narrative centered on mystery and human connection. The second season’s release on BritBox was met with interest from viewers following the first season’s positive reception last year.
