A woman has shared the story of her long-delayed reunion with a man she fell in love with over two decades earlier, a relationship complicated by her marriage and his severe disability. The woman, now 51, met David Robinson, a former soldier and army veteran, in 1991 while working as a trainee nurse at Leicester General Hospital. Robinson, then 23, had been paralysed from the chest down after a tank accident during a training operation in Cyprus three years prior.

Despite his paralysis and resulting dependency on full-time care, the pair quickly formed a deep emotional connection. During her eight-week placement in the hospital’s Younger Disabled Unit, the two developed a strong bond, spending time together daily and secretly falling in love. However, the nurse was married at the time to her first husband, Nigel, whom she had wed at age 23 but described as lacking romance and emotional connection.

Their relationship came to light after Nigel discovered a card addressed to David, which led to immediate demands that the affair end. Torn between loyalty to her marriage vows and her feelings for David, she chose to break off contact, leaving both heartbroken. Subsequently, she focused on her marriage and family, having two children with Nigel and advancing her nursing career, though David remained on her mind.

Unbeknownst to her, David moved into a specially adapted bungalow nearby shortly after leaving the hospital, supported by a team of carers. Although he attempted other relationships, none endured, and he secretly followed the woman from a distance, believing she was content with her family life.
