American Affair marked a significant step in his return from injury by winning the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes, signaling a potential return to top-level competition. The six-year-old sprinter, trained by Jim Goldie in East Renfrewshire, had last secured Group 1 glory in the King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2025 before an injury sidelined him. This season, his first four starts ended without a win, including a disappointing last-place finish in a 26-runner field when defending his title at Ascot.
Despite these setbacks, connections maintained confidence in American Affair’s ability to regain form. The colt, ridden by Paul Mulrennan, delivered a strong finish down the stands’ rail at Musselburgh on August 1, ultimately edging out Rumstar by half a length. Goldie’s son George, who was overseeing saddling duties in his father’s absence, said the focus had been on rebuilding the horse’s fitness and noted improvement despite earlier difficulties, particularly at York where a poor draw hampered his performance.
American Affair’s injury had forced him to miss the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York and a planned trip to the Breeders’ Cup in the United States. Jim Goldie revealed plans to target the Nunthorpe Stakes later this month, with a potential return to America to follow, stating that the American connections are keen to have him compete overseas.
The winning time was just 0.06 seconds shy of the track record set by Battaash in 2020. Mulrennan expressed some frustration, saying that American Affair might have broken the record if he had not dropped his whip during the race.
In a tightly contested finish, Time For Sandals narrowly took third place, a neck behind the runner-up Rumstar, with Asfoora another neck further back in fourth. The Australian mare, a three-time Group 1 winner in Europe, had been expected to return to Australia to begin a breeding career. However, following her strong showing at Musselburgh, her trainer Henry Dwyer said the prospect of keeping her in Britain to contest the Nunthorpe Stakes was under consideration. Dwyer emphasized that the ultimate decision rests with owner Akram El-Fahkri, but acknowledged the encouragement provided by the mare’s recent performance.
Elsewhere, Talk Of New York, the favorited runner after finishing third in the Royal Ascot St James’s Palace Stakes, was outpaced by Shayem in the Group 3 HKJC World Pool Thoroughbred Stakes, with Shayem’s victory marking a second win for trainer Karl Burke on the day. Burke also notched a success when Revels, partnered by Sam James, took the Hawes & Curtis Nursery Handicap.
Trainer Joseph O’Brien and jockey Dylan Browne McMonagle both celebrated double wins. Defiantly captured the Coral Goodwood Handicap over two and a half miles, and later in the session, McMonagle rode Galen to a narrow victory over Burke’s Boiling Point in the Regent Seven Seas Cruises Bentinck Conditions Stakes.
