Alejandro Davidovich Fokina captured his first ATP Masters 1000 title on Sunday at the Shanghai Masters, overcoming Rafael Jodar 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 in a comeback victory. The 25th-seeded Spaniard rallied from a set and a break down to secure his third tournament win of the year and the most significant title of his career to date.
Davidovich Fokina had previously fallen short in each of the five finals he reached, including the 2022 Monte Carlo Masters. Earlier this season, he won ATP 250 events on grass in Mallorca and at the Chengdu Open last month. During the Shanghai tournament, he survived a critical moment in the third round by saving a match point against Frances Tiafoe, a three-time U.S. Open semifinalist. He then defeated soon-to-be world No. 1 Alexander Zverev in the semifinals after dropping the first set.
Jodar, the 20-year-old Spanish player seeded 12th, was seeking his second career title in what marked his debut in a Masters 1000 final. After dominating the opening set, Jodar appeared poised to claim the championship but was unable to maintain his lead as Davidovich Fokina mounted his comeback.
In the women’s draw, Poland’s Maja Chwalinska, the No. 16 seed and runner-up at this year’s French Open, won her first career title at the Wuhan Open. She defeated unseeded British player Sonay Kartal 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the final, overcoming a loss in the opening set to claim the victory.
