Liam Millar played a pivotal role in Birmingham City’s 3-0 victory against Queens Park Rangers at St Andrew’s on Saturday, scoring twice as the Blues secured a crucial Championship win. The Canadian winger’s goals, struck in the 27th and 49th minutes, put Birmingham in firm control over QPR, who entered the match unbeaten on the road and level on points with the hosts.
Millar’s performance marked his fourth goal in his last three appearances at St Andrew’s, earning high praise from Birmingham’s manager Chris Davies. Davies highlighted Millar’s blend of energy, intelligence, and clinical finishing, describing him as “a really good winger” and expressing satisfaction that he was able to secure the player on a season-long loan from Hull City. While Davies acknowledged the unpredictability often associated with loan signings, he noted Millar’s apparent fit and comfort at the club as positive signs for a potential permanent transfer in the future.
The opening goal arose from a swift counterattack initiated by Jay Stansfield’s pressure high up the pitch, which led to a turnover. Tomoki Iwata then played a key role, releasing Millar, who calmly finished with a low shot past QPR goalkeeper Pierce Charles. Millar doubled the advantage shortly after halftime following a well-worked move involving Iwata and Patrick Roberts, with Millar finishing first time from just inside the penalty area.
Despite QPR’s persistent efforts, Birmingham maintained control throughout the match. Goalkeeper James Beadle, making his 50th appearance for the club, was instrumental in preserving the clean sheet, producing a notable save to deny a powerful attempt from Ronnie Edwards in the 63rd minute. Millar came close to a third goal after a cross from substitute Carlos Vicente created confusion in the QPR defense, but Charles was able to block his volley.
The match was sealed in injury time when Luis Vazquez’s pass was cleverly laid off to Demarai Gray, who scored from close range to secure Birmingham’s third goal. The victory moved Birmingham into fourth place in the Championship standings and marked their third consecutive win since the international break without conceding a goal.
