A growing number of hotels in the United Kingdom are offering short-term daytime room rentals, commonly known as "microstays," reflecting a shift in travelers’ accommodation preferences. This trend, long established in France, is gaining traction in the UK, with approximately 860 hotels now providing rooms for blocks as brief as three hours.
Booking platform Dayuse, which facilitates these reservations, highlights the discreet nature of the service, emphasizing guest privacy and professional check-in procedures. According to the company, hotel staff are trained to maintain confidentiality, recognizing that guests often seek brief stays for reasons that require discretion.
The microstays cater to a variety of needs beyond traditional overnight lodging. Some patrons use the rooms for rest or privacy between engagements, while others employ them to freshen up before late flights, prepare for events such as weddings or parties, or enjoy short romantic encounters. Hotels involved in the scheme frequently offer additional amenities aimed at couples, including champagne packages, rose petals, and spa treatments.
Prices for these daytime stays vary significantly, with budget options starting around £40 and luxury experiences reaching up to £300. Barbara Steinert, chief executive of Dayuse, attributes the rise in demand to evolving patterns in how people travel, work, and live, noting steady annual growth in bookings.
This expanding market demonstrates the hospitality sector’s response to changing consumer behaviors, offering flexibility and convenience that differ from traditional overnight accommodations.
