Australian tennis player Alex de Minaur plans to undergo medical scans following an adductor injury that forced him to retire during the China Open final in Beijing on Tuesday. The world number nine was competing against Novak Djokovic when the injury occurred. De Minaur retired while trailing 7-6(7-3), 0-1, handing Djokovic his seventh title in Beijing.
De Minaur said he began to feel discomfort in his adductor muscle toward the end of the first set, with the pain gradually worsening. “I was feeling quite good, then I felt something midway through the end of the first set. Yeah, it gradually got a little worse,” he told reporters after the match. He added that he did not yet know the severity of the injury and planned to travel to Shanghai for further medical examination.
This is not the first time De Minaur has had to withdraw from a match due to injury. In 2024, he retired from a Wimbledon quarter-final match against Djokovic because of a hip injury and was forced to miss the singles tennis event at the Paris Olympics. He returned to competition at the US Open seven weeks later.
De Minaur was scheduled to compete at the Shanghai Masters, which begins this Wednesday. He reached the quarter-finals at this tournament last year. His participation this season now depends on the outcome of upcoming scans and medical assessments.
