A substantial fire in an apartment building in the Bronx on Thursday morning resulted in one fatality and injuries to six firefighters. The five-alarm blaze, which broke out on the upper floors of the structure in the Belmont neighborhood, prompted a significant emergency response.

The intense fire was reported around 5:30 a.m. on East 184th Street near Bassford Avenue. The flames originated on the building's top floor and quickly spread into the cockloft, an attic-like space between the top ceiling and the roof. Visuals released by the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) depicted heavy flames extending from the upper-story windows. Fire officials stated that the blaze rapidly intensified, escalating to a five-alarm incident by approximately 7:25 a.m., which activated a comprehensive response. Chief of Fire Operations Kevin Woods highlighted the operational challenges encountered by crews, noting that the cockloft area is "inherently difficult to access." Firefighters were required to stretch multiple handlines to the top floor and into this confined space to combat the flames. In total, 270 fire and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel were deployed to manage the incident.

One civilian, identified by police solely as a man, was pronounced dead at the scene. Additionally, six firefighters sustained minor injuries during firefighting operations and were subsequently transported to area hospitals for treatment.

The cause of the destructive five-alarm fire remains under active investigation by authorities.

This fatal incident follows a series of deadly apartment fires across New York City in recent weeks. Just four days prior, a 62-year-old woman perished in an apartment fire in Harlem on Sunday afternoon. Earlier in March, on the 16th, a four-alarm blaze in Flushing, Queens, claimed the lives of four individuals, including one child, underscoring a concerning trend of residential fire fatalities in the city.
