At 25 years old, Paige Barnes is navigating the challenges of raising two young daughters while living with deafblindness, a condition that affects both her hearing and sight. Residing in Chessington, South West London, Paige and her partner Sam George, 28, care for their 18-month-old daughter Arabella and three-month-old Millie. Despite the difficulties posed by her disability, Paige emphasizes that to her children, she is simply “Mummy.”
Paige was diagnosed with Usher’s syndrome type 3, a rare genetic disorder affecting approximately one in every 100,000 people, which leads to progressive hearing loss, vision loss, and sometimes balance issues. Although she had worn a cochlear implant since infancy to aid her hearing, she did not learn she was legally blind until she was 17. Reflecting on this, Paige noted that she initially believed her visual impairment was normal, as she had no other reference.
Growing up, Paige faced social challenges related to her disabilities. She recalls being treated differently during primary school and opting not to use a white cane for fear of attracting too much attention. Over the years, she has encountered misconceptions about her abilities and has at times been spoken to in a patronizing way or perceived as less capable.
After joining the security staff at Heathrow Airport, where Sam also works, Paige found a renewed sense of confidence. Despite limitations in her peripheral vision, she performs tasks such as conducting body searches, bag inspections, and scanning boarding passes. While patrolling the terminal presents communication challenges due to reliance on radios, her employer has made accommodations to ensure she can carry out her duties safely and effectively. Paige credits her condition with fostering resilience and determination, asserting that disabilities need not prevent someone from achieving their goals.
Dating proved difficult for Paige, as her experiences on platforms like Tinder initially ended with rejection once potential partners learned of her deafblindness. She described the emotional toll this took on her confidence. However, her relationship with Sam began in November 2022 after he reached out, initiating a connection based on mutual respect and genuine affection. Sam has expressed that he regards Paige as simply himself and admires her devotion as a mother, highlighting the unconditional love they share.
The couple face everyday obstacles, such as Paige’s inability to drive and the stress of navigating busy environments, which require careful planning and reliance on routines. To support her independence and safety at home, Paige has organized familiar layouts and routines, helping her move confidently around the house.
Looking ahead, Paige aims to instill acceptance and advocacy in her daughters concerning disability. She is considering having a third child and hopes to marry Sam in the future. Paige has also committed to raising awareness about disabilities and is participating in a marathon to support Sense, a charity founded 70 years ago by mothers of deafblind children.
