Dean Nicholson has stepped down as manager of Heaton Stannington, bringing to a close one of the most successful periods in the club’s 116-year history. His departure was announced following last Saturday’s draw at North Ferriby, which marked his final match in charge.

Nicholson, who worked alongside assistant Andy McBride, took the club from the Step 6 Northern League Division Two to achieve their highest-ever league finish, securing seventh place in the Step 4 Northern Premier League (NPL) East division last season. Under their leadership, Heaton Stannington also recorded their first Northumberland Senior Cup victory in May 2025, winning a penalty shootout against Morpeth Town at St James’ Park. Although the team came close to defending the trophy, they were defeated by Whitley Bay in last year’s final.

In an official statement, the club expressed deep appreciation for Nicholson’s five-year tenure, emphasizing that his impact extended beyond on-field achievements. The statement credited him with building a competitive and entertaining team, creating memorable experiences for supporters, and contributing significantly to the club’s ongoing development and ambitions.

The club’s directors formally acknowledged Nicholson’s commitment and dedication, expressing gratitude and respect for his contributions. They highlighted that he would remain an integral part of Heaton Stannington’s recent history and extended best wishes for his future endeavors.

Following Nicholson’s exit, assistant manager Andy McBride assumed interim control for the club’s recent fixture against Bradford Park Avenue as Heaton Stannington begins the search for a permanent successor.
