Recent discussions surrounding the purported discovery of Noah’s Ark in the Ararat Mountains of eastern Turkey have sparked debate over the vessel’s original design and historical accuracy. While some reports and illustrations depict the ark as a conventional boat or houseboat, several commentators have highlighted that the biblical description suggests a different form altogether.

According to Genesis 6:15, the ark’s dimensions are specified; however, the text does not indicate that it was shaped like a traditional seafaring vessel with a bow or stern. Instead, it is described more like a large chest or box that was intended to float rather than navigate. This aligns with interpretations emphasizing that the ark’s primary function was to remain watertight and stable during the flood, rather than to travel through water.

Some scholars and early Christian studies propose that the ark’s shape might have resembled a truncated pyramid or a shoebox-like landing craft. This contrasts with the commonly held image, which only became popular after the 12th century and often includes anachronistic animal depictions such as penguins and polar bears onboard.

Supporters of this view argue that since the ark was not designed for propulsion or directional movement, the concept of it as a “boat” is misleading. They note that the ark’s main purpose was to safeguard its occupants until floodwaters receded, after which it would come to rest on dry ground.
