The San Francisco 49ers have re-signed wide receiver Deebo Samuel to a one-year contract worth up to $7 million, marking his return to the team for a second stint. The move comes after starting receiver Ricky Pearsall was sidelined with a knee injury, potentially requiring surgery.
Samuel originally joined the 49ers when he was drafted in the second round in 2019 and spent six seasons with the team. During that time, he helped the franchise reach two Super Bowls and earned All-Pro honors in 2021, posting 1,770 yards from scrimmage and 14 touchdowns. Known for his versatility and ability to gain yards after the catch, Samuel has maintained an average of 8.7 yards after the catch on receptions, ranking first among all NFL receivers with at least 100 catches since 2019.
In 2025, Samuel was traded to the Washington Commanders in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick. During his single season with the Commanders, he recorded 72 receptions for 727 yards and five touchdowns. He became a free agent in March before agreeing to return to San Francisco.
Over his career, Samuel has amassed 406 receptions for 5,519 yards and 27 receiving touchdowns. In addition to his receiving production, he has rushed for 1,218 yards and 21 touchdowns in 97 games, highlighting his dual-threat capability in the NFL.
The 49ers made the decision to bring Samuel back to bolster their receiving corps after Pearsall's injury was announced. The team aims to maintain offensive options and versatility with Samuel’s return as they continue through the season.
