Deep fissures have appeared in the lower sections of the Rhône Glacier located above the village of Gletsch in the Swiss Alps, highlighting the ongoing retreat of this important ice mass. The Rhône Glacier, which serves as the source of the Rhône River, is experiencing a rapid rate of ice loss driven by elevated temperatures.

According to the Swiss glacier monitoring network, Glamos, the glacier has been shrinking by approximately 10 centimeters per day. Over the course of a single month, the ice thickness has decreased by more than four meters. This accelerated melting is attributed to unusually warm weather conditions affecting the region.

The visible cracking and splitting of the glacier’s lower reaches reflect wider trends of glacial retreat observed throughout the Alps in recent decades. These developments raise concerns over the long-term stability of alpine glaciers and their role in supplying freshwater to downstream areas.

Climate experts warn that continued warming may accelerate the rate of ice loss, potentially leading to significant environmental and hydrological impacts. The Rhône Glacier’s ongoing transformation serves as a visible indicator of climate change effects in mountain ecosystems.
