England’s rugby union defence coach Joe El-Abd is set to leave his role following the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia to pursue a coaching position in France's Top 14 league. El-Abd, 46, who joined the England coaching staff in 2024 as the successor to Felix Jones, has prior experience working with French clubs Oyonnax and Castres.
England head coach Steve Borthwick praised El-Abd’s contributions, describing him as an “outstanding coach” who has significantly impacted both the team and its environment. Borthwick expressed confidence that El-Abd will remain fully committed to England’s preparations over the coming year before embarking on his new role in France.
Separately, Leicester Tigers hooker Finn Theobald-Thomas announced his retirement at the age of 23 due to medical reasons. The former England Under-20 international had recently signed with the Gallagher Premiership club ahead of the 2023-24 season, making 33 appearances.
