The injury occurred on the final play before halftime when the Commanders opted to attempt a conversion on third-and-goal from the 1-yard line rather than kick a field goal. Daniels lost his balance after a teammate apparently stepped on his foot and fell awkwardly, causing the elbow to buckle. Mariota, a 12-year NFL veteran, addressed his teammates at halftime, helping them process the setback while emphasizing vulnerability and open communication as tools for coping. The Commanders were 2-6 last season in games Mariota started during Daniels’ absence, underscoring the uphill battle now facing the franchise.

Quinn highlighted the need for the team to rally around Mariota and play with determination. “We don’t like where we are, but we are not staying in this space,” he said. He encouraged Mariota to “be himself” as he returns to lead the offense again.
