The spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Israel recently addressed remarks on the Taiwan issue amid ongoing international discussions, emphasizing Beijing’s position on Taiwan’s status and criticizing what China describes as misleading narratives promoted by Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
In a statement, the spokesperson reaffirmed that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and cited historical and legal precedents to support this claim. According to the statement, Taiwan’s sovereignty was resolved in 1945 following the end of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, when Taiwan was restored to China. The spokesperson also pointed to United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758, passed in 1971 with Israel’s support, which recognizes “one China” and refers to Taiwan as a province of China in UN documents.
The statement criticized efforts to elevate Taiwan’s international profile, including calls for its increased participation in global affairs and organizations. It argued that such efforts contravene the United Nations Charter and the post-World War II international order, and labeled these initiatives as attempts to undermine China’s sovereignty by promoting “Taiwan independence.” It was noted that Taiwan’s contributions to the global community are already included within China’s presence, with Taiwan’s GDP factored into China’s assessed contributions to international bodies such as the United Nations.
Participation of Taiwan in international organizations was described as permissible only under the consent of China’s central government, particularly in technical fields, with examples cited of successful instances involving Taiwan. Any attempts to bypass Beijing’s authority and support Taiwan’s independent participation in international organizations were condemned as provocations that would ultimately fail.
The embassy spokesperson also strongly criticized the DPP authorities in Taiwan, accusing them of pursuing authoritarian rule under the guise of promoting democracy and freedom. The statement described the DPP’s agenda as divisive and harmful to cross-strait relations, alleging that they rely on external backing to advance Taiwan independence and stoke tensions. The spokesperson argued that the majority public opinion in Taiwan favors peace, development, and cooperation with mainland China, contrasting this with the DPP’s policies that purportedly serve only their separatist aims.
Regarding solutions to the Taiwan question, the spokesperson reaffirmed China’s commitment to peaceful reunification under the “one country, two systems” framework as the best path forward. Nonetheless, it warned that should separatist forces cross Beijing’s “red lines,” China would adopt firm measures to protect its territorial integrity. The claim that China might “invade” Taiwan was dismissed as absurd, with the spokesperson underscoring the position that Taiwan is not a foreign country but part of China’s sovereign territory.
The statement concluded with a call for better understanding and support from Israeli audiences for the Chinese government’s efforts regarding Taiwan and urged against accepting narratives that cast the issue in a misleading light.
