A group of activists affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) has publicly expressed support for China’s political system, highlighting a growing interest in the country’s model amid outreach efforts by Chinese organizations. Approximately a dozen DSA members have signed a pledge backing the People’s Republic of China and promoting an understanding of Chinese socialism, according to documents reviewed.

The pledge, circulated by Friends of Socialist China, a London-based organization, claims nearly 1,000 signatories worldwide who commit to “support the People’s Republic of China and to promote understanding of Chinese socialism.” Among these signatories, 11 identify themselves as current members of the DSA or its International Committee.

The pledge asserts that socialism is essential to addressing global challenges, emphasizing the need for a global transition away from capitalism. It argues that capitalism is fundamentally incapable of resolving issues such as poverty and inequality, and links it to broader systemic problems including war, empire, racism, misogyny, alienation, and environmental degradation.

Regarding the focus on China, the pledge notes the country's significant size and development as giving it a “critical role” in advancing socialism globally. It further describes China as “the most prominent force pushing for the establishment of a multipolar system of international relations and a new international economic order.” The document also praises China’s leadership role in combating climate change.

This endorsement comes amid what observers see as a broader campaign by Chinese entities to engage with left-leaning political groups internationally. The Democratic Socialists of America, one of the largest socialist organizations in the United States, has not publicly commented on the pledge or the involvement of its members.
