A Democratic-aligned organization has initiated an advertising campaign targeting Republican Representative Derrick Van Orden of Wisconsin over his backing of the military engagement in Iran. The move signals a potential strategy by Democrats to frame the conflict as a political vulnerability for Republicans ahead of the midterm elections.
The group, VoteVets Action Fund, which supports military veterans seeking public office, announced a $250,000 expenditure for the campaign against Van Orden. A retired Navy SEAL, Van Orden represents a Wisconsin district considered competitive in the upcoming elections. The first advertisement, released Wednesday, draws a comparison between the ongoing military operations in the Middle East and economic strain at home. The ad features a narrator, identified as a Marine Corps veteran, who points to rising gasoline prices as a direct cost of the conflict, stating that while Americans "are paying the cost every damn day of this war in Iran," Representative Van Orden believes "we’re not paying enough." The ad specifically highlights Van Orden’s support for a $200 billion allocation by the Pentagon to finance the war effort.
Despite his support for the overall funding push, Representative Van Orden has previously voiced opposition to deploying U.S. ground troops to Iran, reflecting potential divisions within the Republican party regarding the conflict.
The campaign emerges as public sentiment indicates low support for the military action. On average, more than half of voters oppose the intervention in Iran, according to the newsletter Silver Bulletin. Furthermore, a recent Pew Research Center survey found that 61 percent of Americans disapproved of President Trump’s handling of the conflict. The VoteVets initiative suggests Democrats may utilize the war as a central issue in the midterms, connecting President Trump’s decision to attack the country with domestic economic concerns, including escalating gas prices.
In response to the ad campaign, Representative Van Orden’s office issued a statement reiterating his support for the military effort in Iran. "Iran has been at war with the United States for 47 years," Van Orden stated. He added, "When we start putting a price tag on American citizens’ lives, we’ve already lost sight of our responsibility. Every single American murdered by these radical Muslim mullahs is priceless, and every American life we can save is beyond value."
The war in Iran, now over a month old, has seen limited spending on political advertisements. Data from AdImpact, a media tracking firm, indicates that only $620,000 has been spent by both parties on ads mentioning Iran over the last month. VoteVets plans to run its initial ad across various platforms, including television, radio, digital, and streaming services, with placements during upcoming N.C.A.A. basketball games. The group also stated that "additional ads targeting other Republican veterans in Congress" would follow.
