Melbourne Football Club forward Brody Mihocek has revealed the severity of his recent neck injury, which left him fearing he might never walk again. The 33-year-old suffered a fractured neck during a match against his former team, Collingwood, earlier this month at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

In his first public remarks since the incident, Mihocek described hearing a "massive crack" as his head struck the turf in a tackle involving ex-teammate Billy Frampton. He immediately recognized the seriousness of the injury and faced daunting thoughts about his future mobility and quality of life.

“Your thoughts quickly go to the worst-case scenario, like not being able to walk,” Mihocek said. “I pictured what life might look like, including what it would be like with a family.” He recalled the gradual return of sensation starting in his hips and moving to his legs and arms, though he remained limited in his physical functions.

On the day of the injury, Mihocek said he and those around him tried to remain calm despite the traumatic nature of the incident. His partner, Polly, and father, Jack, were present and deeply concerned. Mihocek praised Polly for managing the situation with composure and taking charge while friends also helped support him. Their young son, Arthur, was at home, unaware of the injury’s seriousness.

Mihocek faces at least six weeks in a neck brace, followed by an additional six weeks of minimal activity as part of his recovery. Despite the setback, he is determined to stay involved with the Melbourne Football Club and contribute to the team’s efforts this season as his rehabilitation progresses.

“When you’re a full-time athlete and suddenly lose that ability, it’s daunting,” Mihocek said. “But there are small things I can do to help. I plan to start rehab soon and get back with the team as much as I can.” He acknowledged the risks involved in the sport and expressed a resolve to move forward.

The injury has cast uncertainty over Mihocek’s playing future, but his mindset remains focused on recovery and supporting his teammates through the remainder of the season.
