Deniz Undav has emerged as an unexpected standout at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, delivering crucial contributions off the bench for Germany in the tournament’s initial stages. The 29-year-old forward, making his World Cup debut, has registered three goals and two assists in just 67 minutes of play, the highest number of goal involvements by a substitute since 1990. His performances have helped Germany secure the top position in Group E and advance to the knockout rounds for the first time since their 2014 World Cup victory in Brazil.
Undav’s rise comes after a relatively modest international profile, having been called up to the German national team two years ago but limited to a brief six-minute appearance during Euro 2024. The striker, whose parents are Kurdish immigrants from Turkey, has quickly become a key asset thanks to his sharp instincts and mobility in the attacking third. Germany’s head coach Julian Nagelsmann praised Undav’s intuitive movement and ability to impact the game immediately upon entering.
Born in Germany, Undav’s journey to the World Cup stage was unconventional. After spending five years in Werder Bremen’s youth academy, he was released for his physical stature. At 17, he played in Germany’s fourth division while supplementing his income with factory work involving laser-cutting machines, starting shifts at 4 a.m. His breakthrough came during a stint in Belgium’s second division in 2020, followed by a season in the English Premier League with Brighton & Hove Albion. He currently plays for VfB Stuttgart, where he finished as the Bundesliga’s second-highest scorer last season, trailing only England’s Harry Kane.
At the World Cup, Undav’s impact off the bench was immediate. He became only the second German player to register two assists in a World Cup match as a substitute while scoring in a 7-1 victory over Curacao. In Germany’s following group game against Ivory Coast, he was introduced in the 60th minute with the team trailing 1-0. Undav scored a volley eight minutes later to equalize and then netted the winning goal in stoppage time, becoming the first German in 24 years to score in his first two World Cup appearances.
Reflecting on his breakthrough, Undav expressed his delight and embraced the growing recognition, noting the enthusiasm of fans both locally and abroad. His rapid emergence has added a compelling new dimension to Germany’s campaign as the tournament progresses.
