Colchester United extended their winless streak to seven matches after a goalless draw at home against Exeter City on Saturday. Despite being hampered by a series of injuries, Colchester manager Danny Cowley focused on the positives from the result, emphasizing his team's effort and resilience under difficult circumstances.
Cowley acknowledged the challenges facing his squad but praised their commitment both on the training ground and during the match. “With the amount that’s gone against us with lots of injuries, it would be easy for us to feel sorry for ourselves,” he said. “All I’ve seen is a group that worked really hard, really committed to their training and prepared really diligently and then tried as hard as they could, in the game.”
The match, played at Colchester’s home ground, was marked by a balance in chances but ultimately ended 0-0. Colchester created some notable opportunities, including a headed goal by Bradley Ihionvien that was disallowed for offside. Exeter’s Josh Gordon also tested the hosts’ goalkeeper Thimothee Lo-Tutala with an early strike saved near the post.
The first half saw solid defensive efforts from both teams, with Lo-Tutala making a key save from Charlie Cummins’ shot and the Exeter defense thwarting several Colchester attempts, including a deflected strike from Oscar Thorn that narrowly missed the target before halftime.
Colchester pressed the game’s tempo early in the second half, with Jack Tucker’s strike rattling the crossbar after a Moses Sessay attempt. Despite some promising attacking moves, including Ihionvien’s low shot that Exeter goalkeeper Jack Bycroft diverted for a corner, neither side managed to break the deadlock.
Exeter manager Matt Taylor described the point as hard-earned and was content with his team’s defensive solidity. “We were defensively solid and sound. We kept a good attacking team at arm’s length,” Taylor said. He noted that while Exeter struggled to maintain attacking momentum under pressure, avoiding defeat was the priority. “If your attacking output is not there, make sure you don’t lose the game.”
Colchester’s ongoing injury woes have restricted their options, and Cowley recognized the difficulty of securing a win during a run that has seen just one home game in five. Nonetheless, he considered the clean sheet a positive outcome in a challenging stretch for the U’s.
Both teams will look to build on this point as they continue their campaigns in the league, with Colchester aiming to halt their extended winless spell and Exeter seeking to convert defensive resilience into attacking success.
