Li developed the concept after observing that menstruation remained a sensitive topic among visually impaired women, who often lacked practical support. Her approach involved gathering images of bloodstains from volunteers to train the AI system, although the device still requires refinement, particularly in detecting blood on creased paper. Li envisions the product could be mass-produced at a low cost, with production expenses primarily limited to the bin’s casing, while the AI software remains updateable and reusable. Her project reflects a broader shift in disability services toward enhancing quality of life and dignity, a priority echoed in China’s newly released 15th Five-Year Plan for persons with disabilities (2026–2030), which emphasizes improving spiritual and cultural wellbeing.
Parallel efforts in accessible design are underway at Nantong University, Jiangsu province, where a student team led by textiles and fashion major Zhang Xiaotong is working to redefine clothing for people with disabilities. The project, initiated in 2022 and including psychology student Sun Yue—who has a lower limb disability—focuses on creating garments that facilitate independent dressing, moving away from conventional “hospital” style attire toward personalized, functional, and aesthetically appealing designs.
Sun, who faced barriers in her childhood when unable to dress herself during a crucial school entrance assessment, now benefits from custom-designed clothing featuring elements such as full-length side zippers and padded linings that accommodate wheelchair users. The team has produced over 385 tailored garments, including adaptive clothing for individuals with specific medical conditions and customized items like a wedding dress for an amputee woman. Innovations also extend to fabric technology, such as “aromatic fabrics” embedded with microcapsules that gradually release pleasant scents to counter concerns about body odor, supporting users’ confidence and self-expression.
At Beijing Union University’s College of Special Education, students have developed China’s first accessible Braille keyboard to assist visually impaired users. Initially completed in 2024 with an estimated cost of 300 yuan (approximately $44), the keyboard has undergone several improvements, incorporating 3D-printed tactile keys and Java-based software that integrates with screen-reading tools to provide audio feedback and improve exam navigation for blind students. Team member Wang Yueran, who also has a disability, credits the keyboard with enhancing his academic performance and bolstering his career prospects through government-related employment.
The college’s vice-dean, Qu Xin, emphasized the importance of inclusive education and advanced technology in helping students with disabilities achieve equal participation in society, underscoring a shared goal to ensure children of all abilities find their place.
