Two public aquatic centers in the San Fernando Valley offer residents a mix of historic charm and modern amenities, serving as community hubs for recreation and swim activities.
Reseda Park Pool, located at 18411 Victory Blvd. in Reseda, first opened on July 4, 1931. The pool maintains much of its original Mission-style architecture, including a two-story administration building and Spanish colonnades, providing a distinctive backdrop that contrasts with its contemporary pool facilities. Measuring approximately 22.86 meters by 36.57 meters, the pool features nine swim lanes with depths ranging from three to twelve feet. The facility does not require lane reservations, accommodating lap swimmers, pool sports, and swim leagues. The pool operates primarily between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays, with weekend hours from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., though visitors should confirm schedules online as hours may change without notice.
Admission fees at Reseda are modest, with children and seniors paying $1 and adults between ages 18 and 49 paying $4. Persons with disabilities are also charged $1, and payments are accepted in cash only. Additional amenities include free parking, pool noodles and kickboards for use, lifeguard training, and swim lessons. Due to its outdoor setting and limited shade—partially provided by an industrial-style cabana—visitors are advised to use sunscreen and stay hydrated. Beyond the pool, the park offers other water-related features such as Reseda Park Lake and nearby sections of the Los Angeles River.
The Van Ness Recreation Center at 5720 2nd Ave., Los Angeles, reopened its pool in 2021 following a 15-year closure and extensive renovations. Originally constructed in 1959, the updated facility includes a 75-foot by 120-foot heated pool with eight swim lanes, a diving board, and a 42-foot serpentine slide that operates during summer months. Depths range from three to twelve feet, with a dedicated twelve-foot diving well. The center supports recreational and lap swimming year-round, as well as swim classes for various age groups and youth aquatic sports including water polo, diving, and artistic swimming.
In addition to swim sessions, Van Ness offers special programming such as Aqua Fit classes, stand-up paddleboarding, and kayaking during select events. Younger visitors can enjoy a splash pad with fountains, adjacent playground, and basketball court, making the facility a family-friendly destination. The center typically operates from noon to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends, but patrons are encouraged to verify hours online due to potential schedule adjustments.
Admission at Van Ness is free for children age two and under. Other visitors pay $4 for adults aged 18 to 49, and $1 for children ages 3 to 17, adults 50 and older, and individuals with disabilities, with cash-only payments accepted. Complimentary parking is available onsite.
Both facilities provide accessible, affordable aquatic options for San Fernando Valley residents, combining community-oriented programs with historic and modern features.
