Detectives investigating a fatal crash on the A66 that resulted in the deaths of two police officers have made ten arrests connected to a vehicle involved in the incident. The Volvo XC60 in question reportedly collided with three homes in Middlesbrough in August, prompting members of a rival gang to pursue the vehicle’s occupants. In the ensuing confrontation, a Volkswagen Passat struck a police car, killing all five men inside, as well as PCs Matthew Blades, 37, and Tom Clough, 38.
Cleveland Police have conducted an extensive operation, making 50 arrests overall, with ten specifically tied to the Volvo. As part of this inquiry, officers seized multiple firearms—including three shotguns and two handguns—along with ammunition, machetes, approximately £60,000 in drugs, and £34,750 in cash.
Detective Chief Superintendent Helen Barker emphasized the significance of the investigation, stating that the enforcement actions demonstrate a strong commitment to combating serious and organized crime in the region. The inquiry remains ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the events leading up to the fatal crash.
