Jared Goff threw three touchdown passes and running back Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 151 yards with two scores as the Detroit Lions defeated the Arizona Cardinals 45-21 on Sunday in Glendale. The Lions overcame an early deficit by scoring 31 consecutive points to secure their third win of the season.
Detroit trailed 7-0 after Arizona took an early lead on a two-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jacoby Brissett to wide receiver Teagan Quitoriano. However, the momentum shifted in Detroit’s favor around the time news emerged of the Lions’ trade acquiring wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.
Gibbs, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, scored on a one-yard run in the second quarter and later added a three-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, displaying power and agility as he bounced off the offensive line and reversed field. With his two rushing touchdowns, Gibbs set a new NFL record with 58 career touchdowns before turning 25, surpassing the mark previously held by Lions legend Barry Sanders.
Wide receiver Jameson Williams contributed with his first multi-touchdown receiving game, hauling in scoring catches of eight and 39 yards. Tight end Sam LaPorta also made a significant impact, catching a 38-yard touchdown pass on a catch-and-run that helped Detroit build a 24-7 lead by halftime.
Arizona, now 1-4 on the season, extended its losing streak to nine straight home games. The Cardinals struggled to contain the Lions’ offense after the initial score and were unable to slow Detroit’s scoring surge in the second and third quarters.
The victory marked a strong statement for Detroit, improving their record to 3-2, while Arizona continues to seek answers as it approaches the midpoint of the season.
