Deutsche Bank has announced that its asset management unit, DWS, will rebrand under the Deutsche Asset Management name starting in November, marking a strategic reversal of a decision made eight years ago. The move aims to leverage the Deutsche Bank brand’s strong international recognition among institutional investors.
The rebranding represents a shift from DWS’s 2018 decision to adopt an independent identity ahead of its initial public offering. At that time, DWS cited the negative impact of being closely associated with Deutsche Bank, which had recently faced significant legal and regulatory issues, including multibillion-dollar settlements related to interest-rate manipulation, money laundering, and securities mis-selling. DWS had then characterized the separation as a necessary step to establish itself as a standalone asset manager.
Since then, Deutsche Bank under Chief Executive Christian Sewing has succeeded in restoring profitability, reinforcing its capital base, and resolving many of the challenges that affected the bank in the years following the 2008 financial crisis. Deutsche Bank, which holds about an 80 percent stake in DWS, has gradually integrated the asset manager more closely with its broader operations. This includes expanding partnerships between DWS and Deutsche Bank’s investment and corporate banking divisions, particularly in areas such as private credit origination.
DWS Chief Executive Stefan Hoops, who joined Deutsche Bank’s management board earlier this year and is regarded as a potential successor to Sewing, has played a key role in improving the asset manager’s financial performance. Since taking the helm in 2022, Hoops has overseen a nearly 50 percent increase in DWS’s share price over the past year, outperforming Deutsche Bank’s own stock, which rose by close to 20 percent during the same period.
Under the new branding strategy, the DWS name will remain in use but will be concentrated on active fund management within Germany and core European markets. The Deutsche Asset Management brand will serve as the primary global identity for institutional clients and private markets while acting as an umbrella for the group’s other asset management brands. The rebranding reflects Deutsche Bank’s intent to unify its asset management operations under a stronger, more recognizable corporate identity.
