A Malaysian property developer has launched a nationwide hackathon aimed at engaging university students in generating innovative ideas for sustainable and livable future townships. The Sime Darby Property University Hackathon 2026, which runs until December, invites students from public and private universities across the country to collaborate on real-world sustainability challenges under the guidance of industry experts and mentors.
Organised by Sime Darby Property Bhd in partnership with the innovation platform Kolaxus, the event targets participation from more than 1,000 students. The hackathon’s theme, "How might we reimagine the township of tomorrow where people, businesses and nature thrive together through innovation, technology and sustainable living?" encourages participants to develop concepts that address two main focus areas: people and planet.
The “people” focus area challenges students to propose solutions aimed at enhancing the quality of life within townships, including aspects such as health, safety, community connectivity, and overall well-being. In contrast, the “planet” theme emphasises environmental regeneration and the adoption of sustainable living practices to make eco-friendly choices easier for residents, businesses, and communities.
Participants are expected to incorporate practical community solutions supported by technology, data analytics, or artificial intelligence to make their ideas scalable and impactful. Selected concepts may move beyond the competition stage to undergo further development and potential proof-of-concept exploration with Sime Darby Property’s teams.
The hackathon offers a total prize pool of RM14,000, with RM6,000 awarded to the champion team, RM3,000 to the first runner-up, RM1,500 to the second runner-up, and RM500 each to teams placing fourth through tenth. In addition to monetary awards, winners have the chance to be considered for internship opportunities within Sime Darby Property, providing pathways for industry experience and continued mentorship.
The competition will conclude with a grand finale on November 14, followed by Sime Darby Property’s Innovation Day in December, where the top five teams will present their ideas and the overall winners will be announced.
Through this initiative, Sime Darby Property aims to harness the creativity and perspectives of young Malaysians to address pressing township development challenges while fostering the growth of innovative solutions that balance human and environmental needs.
Further details and registration information are available on the official hackathon webpage.
