DFI Retail, the food and beverage division of Hong Kong-based conglomerate Jardine Matheson, has put its shopping mall at The Peak up for sale through a public tender. The sale covers the entire commercial segment of the Dairy Farm Guildford Road Shopping Centre, with bids accepted until noon on November 19, according to exclusive agent CBRE.
Located near the German Swiss International School’s Peak campus, the property features a two-storey retail podium encompassing approximately 8,974 square feet of gross floor area, along with several parking spaces. The mall is fully leased to a diverse mix of tenants, including Wellcome Supermarket, property agencies, and a café.
Avan Pau, senior director of CBRE DFI Hong Kong capital markets, highlighted the mall’s strong positioning, citing its proximity to a wealthy residential community and the German Swiss International School, which enrolls about 1,300 students from over 30 countries. This combination, Pau noted, offers a robust and sustainable customer base that supports the retail offerings.
Looking ahead, the area’s commercial appeal is expected to grow further with around 200 affluent families planned to move into a new ultra-luxury residential development on Mansfield Road, spearheaded by Wheelock Properties, upon its completion in 2028. Pau indicated that this influx would boost local spending power and enhance the long-term value of the shopping center.
In related developments, DFI Retail is set to assume control of more than 1,100 Starbucks outlets across Asia following a transaction with Maxim’s Caterers. Under the deal, Maxim’s will repurchase half of its stake previously held by the Jardine Matheson subsidiary. Jardine Matheson initially acquired a 50 percent interest in Maxim’s in 1972 before transferring ownership to Dairy Farm, now branded as DFI Retail. The Wu family continues to hold the remaining 50 percent through Hongkong Caterers.
The retail sector in Hong Kong appears to be on a recovery trajectory. Provisional data from the Census and Statistics Department show an 8.5 percent increase in retail sales during the first eight months of 2026 compared with the same period last year, signaling a gradual rebound in consumer activity.
