The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in Oman is advancing efforts to diversify the nation’s agricultural output by promoting high-value cash crops tailored to the strengths of various regions. One emerging focus is mountain agriculture in Dhofar Governorate, where the climate and environment are well suited to cultivating premium crops such as Arabica coffee.
The Arabica Coffee Project, initiated by the Ministry, aims to leverage Dhofar’s natural resources to establish a sustainable agricultural sector that benefits both farmers and investors. According to Eng Radhwan bin Abdullah al Ibrahim, Director of the Agricultural Development Department in Dhofar and Project Manager for the initiative, the project represents a strategic attempt to revitalize an economically promising crop with the potential to become a significant economic driver in the region.
The project’s first phase launched in October 2025, coinciding with Omani Agriculture Day. Participants receive support that includes the provision of coffee seedlings, technical guidance, training on advanced farming techniques, and assistance with the installation of irrigation systems designed to optimize water use and promote sustainability.
This endeavor follows earlier agricultural development projects in the region focused on turmeric and ginger, launched in 2022 and 2023, respectively. The ongoing Arabica coffee initiative thus represents a new stage in advancing high-value crop production within Dhofar’s mountainous areas.
Preliminary trials conducted in the Qairoon Hairiti region have yielded positive outcomes, particularly with Arabica varieties such as Adeni and Al Dawairi, providing evidence to support plans for wider expansion throughout the governorate. The initial phase involves 30 farmers across Salalah, Taqah, and Mirbat, indicating a targeted yet scalable approach.
Beyond its economic objectives, the project also aims to balance profitability with environmental sustainability, offering a potential model for future agricultural projects in Oman that seek to combine innovation with ecological stewardship.
