Diabetes Qatar, also known as the Qatar Diabetes Association, recently organised a support programme specifically designed for children newly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and their families. The initiative took place at Diabetes Qatar’s headquarters and involved 13 families. It aimed to provide psychological support during the critical early stages following diagnosis, assisting both children and parents to adjust to the new challenges associated with managing the condition.

The programme sought to foster a sense of community among participating children by allowing them to connect with peers experiencing similar circumstances. Activities were tailored to be both educational and recreational, helping children gain confidence in managing their diabetes. Through interactive sessions, participants learned about insulin injection sites and engaged in games and group exercises that promoted self-esteem and created a supportive atmosphere.

In parallel with the children’s activities, Diabetes Qatar provided parents with information about the association’s various services and programmes. These include health education, psychological support, and community-based resources aimed at helping families manage life with diabetes. A dedicated psychological workshop for parents was conducted by Sanabel Akef from the Al Sanabel Specialised Mental Health Centre. This session addressed the emotional impact of a child’s diagnosis and offered practical strategies to assist families during the initial adaptation period.

This specialised support programme is part of the wider summer campaign led by the Qatar Diabetes Association, which focuses on raising health awareness and promoting healthy lifestyles within the community. Alongside this initiative, the association also took part in the Qatar Sports For All Federation’s Summer Activity Programme. Additionally, it delivered a series of online educational workshops, including one titled “Our Children’s Health Starts at Home,” which emphasized the role of family involvement in fostering healthy habits and preventing chronic illnesses.
