The Australian Diamonds retained their position as the top-ranked netball team in the world after a 68-58 victory over New Zealand in Melbourne, avoiding a series whitewash in the Constellation Cup. Despite New Zealand having already secured the series 3-0, the Silver Ferns needed this win to claim the No. 1 ranking for the first time since 2013. The Diamonds’ win on Wednesday night at John Cain Arena ensured they remain at the summit of the world rankings when the new standings are published in December.

Goal attack Georgie Horjus played a pivotal role in the contest, finishing with 26 goals from 28 attempts and providing 20 goal assists. After a slow start, Horjus dominated in the third quarter, helping Australia seize control of the match. Her performance was particularly significant as fellow shooter Sophie Garbin, who converted 42 of 47 shots, was tightly marked by New Zealand defenders Kelly Jackson and Parris Mason.

The match saw strong defensive efforts from both sides. Australia’s young goalkeeper Jessie Grenvold effectively challenged New Zealand’s goal shooter Grace Nweke, who scored 42 goals from 45 attempts. Australian captain Liz Watson was influential in attack, supplying 50 feeds and 25 goal assists, while vice-captain Kate Moloney contributed despite playing with a finger injury.

For the Silver Ferns, midcourt player Peta Toeava was a key figure, registering 28 assists and 32 feeds, complementing Nweke’s scoring and New Zealand’s defensive efforts. The New Zealand squad faced some rotation in the third quarter, which coincided with Australia gaining momentum and establishing a seven-goal lead late in the period.

Australia entered the match without several regular starters, including Jamie-Lee Price (calf), Matilda Garrett (concussion), Jo Weston (managed), and Sunday Aryang (knee). Despite these absences, coach Stacey Marinkovich opted for a consistent lineup throughout the game.

The first quarter was tightly contested, with frequent lead changes culminating in a one-goal advantage for New Zealand at the break. Both teams scored 17 goals in the second quarter, keeping the Silver Ferns ahead by a single goal at halftime. However, the Diamonds’ increased scoring urgency and tighter defensive pressure in the third quarter shifted the momentum in their favor, allowing them to maintain their lead and secure the win.

This victory concludes Australia’s matches before the 2027 World Cup, which they will host in Sydney next year. The Diamonds aim to return to the top of international netball following a disappointing performance at the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Meanwhile, New Zealand’s unbeaten series record remains intact, having won the Constellation Cup 3-1.
