AFC Rushden & Diamonds secured a historic victory to reach the FA Cup first round for the first time in the club’s history after defeating Morecambe at Hayden Road on Saturday. The eighth-tier side, managed by Elliot Sandy, claimed the win with two first-half goals, overcoming their National League North opponents 2-1.

James Clifton opened the scoring in the 20th minute, capitalizing on a chaotic scramble in the Morecambe penalty area following a long throw. Four minutes later, Matt Warburton extended the lead with a well-executed free-kick that curled around the wall and into the bottom left corner of goalkeeper Myles Boney’s net.

Morecambe responded in the second half, mounting sustained pressure and narrowing the deficit through a header by Joe Garner, assisted by Ruben Curley. The visitors created a series of chances thereafter, but goalkeeper Charlie Woods produced several crucial saves to deny efforts from Isaac Buckley-Ricketts, Paul Lewis, and Cameron Coxe, helping Rushden & Diamonds maintain their advantage.

Buckley-Ricketts, who had previously scored the winning goal for Macclesfield against Crystal Palace in last year’s FA Cup, saw one of his shots cleared off the line, while defensive lapses almost allowed Morecambe further opportunities, including a near own-goal from Diamonds defender Freddie Robinson, whose sliced clearance narrowly missed the target.

The home side, fueled by a sell-out crowd, came close to a third goal in the opening stages when Bruno Andrade’s header was saved and the rebound attempt was missed. Despite Morecambe’s aggressive second-half approach, substitutions such as Taelor O’Kane were unable to find the equalizer.

Reflecting on the achievement, Clifton expressed disbelief at the team’s progress, noting the challenges overcome after several earlier matches in the competition against higher-level opposition. The victory marks a milestone for Rushden & Diamonds, who began their cup run in August and can now anticipate their first-round fixtures with great optimism.
