Traditional treatments, including antibiotics and steroid nasal sprays, provided only temporary relief, with symptoms recurring each time medication was stopped. However, Hardy recently reported a near-complete resolution of his symptoms after eliminating dairy from his diet.
Hardy’s symptoms included intense facial pain, nasal inflammation, and mucus buildup that made breathing difficult, especially at night. After struggling for several years and trying conventional therapies, it was a nutritionist’s suggestion to consider dietary triggers that prompted him to remove dairy products, such as yogurt, butter, and cheese, from his meals. Within days of making this change, Hardy noticed a significant reduction in congestion and pain.
Though the link between dairy consumption and increased mucus production has long been debated, recent research points to a more nuanced relationship involving allergic or sensitivity reactions to cow’s milk in some individuals with chronic sinusitis. A 2011 study from the Medical University of Vienna found undiagnosed milk allergies in approximately one-seventh of chronic sinusitis patients, a finding absent in the control group.
Experts acknowledge that dairy is unlikely to be a universal cause of chronic sinus inflammation, but it may contribute to symptoms in certain cases. Dr. Carl Philpott, an ear, nose, and throat surgeon at the University of East Anglia, notes that many patients inquire about the potential dietary impact on their condition. He often recommends an elimination diet, advising patients to avoid dairy for a week to observe any symptomatic changes.
Broader research reinforces the possible role of diet in managing sinus health. A review published earlier this year linked anti-inflammatory diets to improved sinus outcomes, while high-fat and ultra-processed food consumption correlated with more severe symptoms. However, researchers caution that the current evidence base is limited, and further large-scale clinical trials are necessary before dietary modifications can be formally recommended as standard treatment.
Dr. Philpott explains that chronic sinusitis involves an exaggerated immune response in the nasal and sinus tissues, often triggered by environmental factors like dust or infections. This immune sensitivity tends to develop over time, frequently manifesting in middle age. Underlying food allergies or intolerances may exacerbate this inflammation in some patients, making diet a potentially relevant factor in symptom control.
In the meantime, conventional treatments remain central to managing chronic sinusitis. These include regular saline nasal rinsing to clear irritants and mucus, as well as steroid nasal sprays to reduce inflammation. Medical professionals warn against prolonged use of over-the-counter decongestant sprays due to the risk of rebound congestion, which may worsen symptoms. A survey by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society found that many patients are unaware of this risk.
Early diagnosis and appropriate management are critical, according to Dr. Philpott. He observes an increase in severe sinusitis cases since the COVID-19 pandemic, underscoring the importance of timely medical intervention. Patients with persistent symptoms are advised to maintain diligent nasal rinsing routines and seek referral to an ENT specialist if their condition does not improve after several months of treatment.
