A small clinical study suggests that the dietary supplement L-glutamine may significantly extend survival in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer when used alongside chemotherapy. Researchers at Cedars-Sinai Health Sciences University in Los Angeles reported that patients taking L-glutamine with their standard treatment lived nearly twice as long as the typical survival time for this aggressive disease.

Pancreatic cancer, which affects approximately 11,500 people annually in the United Kingdom, is known for having some of the lowest survival rates among cancers. For those diagnosed at stage four, average survival ranges from eight to 13 months. The study evaluated 16 patients with advanced pancreatic cancer who supplemented their chemotherapy with L-glutamine, an amino acid naturally produced by the body and involved in digestive processes.

According to the study findings, these patients survived an average of 22 months, marking a substantial improvement over historical averages. Laboratory experiments supported the clinical observations by demonstrating that cancer cells exposed to higher concentrations of L-glutamine were more susceptible to chemotherapy.

Dr. Robert Figlin, interim director of Cedars-Sinai Cancer, highlighted the potential significance of the findings given the typically poor outcomes for advanced pancreatic cancer. He noted that the trial offers a promising avenue for enhancing first-line chemotherapy strategies and encourages further research to explore the mechanisms and wider applications of L-glutamine in cancer treatment.

While the results are preliminary and based on a limited patient cohort, the study opens new possibilities for improving the prognosis of a cancer type that has long challenged medical professionals due to its aggressive nature and limited effective therapies. Further research involving larger, controlled trials will be necessary to confirm the benefits and establish guidelines for incorporating L-glutamine into standard treatment protocols.
