A Chinese Hunan restaurant chain known for its signature stir-fried pork dish has withdrawn its longtime honorary title “Stir-Fried Pork King” amid regulatory changes and domestic scrutiny. Chef Fei, established in 2003, has grown into one of China’s most prominent Hunan cuisine brands, operating more than 200 locations nationwide and serving over 100 million customers by 2025.

The chain recently expanded internationally, opening its first United States outlet on August 29 in San Diego, California. The US launch introduced diners to a modified version of its famed dish—stir-fried beef with peppers—priced at $32.79. The venue aims to immerse customers in an authentic Chinese dining experience, complementing its food with cultural elements such as a rhythmic welcome inspired by guankou, a rapid-fire storytelling tradition from Chinese Xiangsheng performance art. Some American patrons and Chinese students living in the US praised this approach for offering a more genuine representation of Chinese cuisine compared to Westernized adaptations.

Despite its overseas popularity, Chef Fei has encountered challenges in its home market following policy shifts by Chinese authorities. In July, the China Cuisine Association announced it would no longer recognise previously awarded honorary titles, including “master” designations, citing regulatory concerns. The Chinese government also emphasized in August that social organisations must cease unapproved competitions that grant honorary titles containing official-sounding terms such as “national.”

Investigations into Chef Fei’s “National Stir-Fried Pork King” title revealed it originated from a 2020 online contest held by the association. This competition evaluated dishes through submitted photos and videos, open public voting, and professional assessments rather than in-person tastings. The method drew criticism from consumers questioning the credibility of judging food quality and flavor based on visual media alone.

The chain has since distanced itself from the honorary title in light of these controversies. While Chef Fei continues to expand its brand both domestically and internationally, it now faces a more complex market environment shaped by increased regulatory oversight over culinary awards and certifications in China.
