A devastating glacier collapse and subsequent mudslide along the China-Nepal border last week has resulted in a significant loss of life and ongoing search and rescue efforts. The disaster struck the Gyirong Port area, a key border crossing between the two countries, causing destruction to infrastructure and widespread casualties.

The incident occurred on Wednesday at the confluence of two rivers in Gyirong County, Tibet, where a massive surge of ice, floodwater, and debris cascaded down from glaciers at an altitude of approximately 5,200 meters on the Nepalese side near Langtang Lirung. The sudden avalanche overwhelmed the area within minutes, demolishing 27 buildings in the border complex and sweeping people and vehicles downstream.

As of Monday, Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported at least 903 deaths and 4,247 people missing, including 592 foreigners from dozens of countries. Chinese authorities confirmed 16 deaths in Tibet and an additional 546 individuals missing. The toll is expected to rise as rescue teams continue searching in difficult terrain under worsening weather conditions.

The Gyirong Port border crossing, established as the primary trade route between China and Nepal after the 2015 earthquake damaged an alternative crossing, sits on a narrow strip of land in a steep river gorge. Experts note that this location, while vulnerable to natural hazards, was historically considered relatively safe. However, the steep topography and glacial rivers pose ongoing risks. This area was also affected by a similar glacial lake outburst flood just 14 months prior, which led to prolonged port closures and prompted the implementation of updated emergency preparedness measures and flood defenses.

Despite these precautions, the most recent disaster was triggered by a glacier collapse and ice avalanche—a hazard that traditional flood monitoring and early warning systems were not designed to detect. Scientists suggest that rising temperatures have accelerated glacier melt and destabilized permafrost and bedrock, contributing to complex "cascade hazards" involving landslides and ice avalanches occurring in quick succession.

Chinese authorities have issued warnings about further risks of glacier collapses, landslides, and the potential formation of new barrier lakes downstream in Tibet. The Ministry of Water Resources highlighted ongoing threats along the Cuojian River in Nepal, which feeds into Tibetan waterways, and urged continued vigilance amid forecasts of persistent heavy rainfall in Gyirong County, which may complicate rescue and relief operations.

Rescue teams have conducted extensive searches, covering tens of thousands of square meters, and are preparing for deeper excavation efforts as initial operations focused on surface debris. Transportation routes leading to the border crossing, including a national highway heavily damaged by the mudslide, have been gradually cleared but remain challenging due to weather and terrain.

The disaster has raised broader concerns about infrastructure development and settlement in high-risk mountainous regions, with experts emphasizing the need for improved understanding of mountain-specific risks, including multiple, interacting hazards influenced by climate change. Despite the dangers, alternatives to Gyirong Port as a trade and travel route are limited due to the region’s geography, and previous crossings have also faced their own hazards linked to glaciers and seismic activity.
