Disney is set to release its new animated fantasy film, *Hexed*, on November 26, marking the debut of an original witch-themed story centered on a mother-daughter relationship. Directed by Fawn Veerasunthorn, Jason Hand, and Josie Trinidad, the film explores themes of family reconciliation alongside supernatural adventure.
*Hexed* follows Billie Doe, a teenage girl voiced by Hailee Steinfeld, who discovers she possesses magical abilities that transport her to Hexe, a newly created witch world. The film’s narrative focuses on Billie’s journey as she navigates her powers and works to repair a strained bond with her mother, Alice Doe, voiced by Rashida Jones. The cast also includes Walton Goggins as Beef Roger Crummchuck, a three-eyed green cat, and Jodie Foster as the queen of witches, who serves as the story’s antagonist.
According to Veerasunthorn, the film is intended as a “mother-daughter love story” that portrays the complexities and eventual healing of their relationship. She described the emotional dynamics as a “rift” that the characters seek to overcome throughout the story.
In developing *Hexed*, the creative team deliberately moved away from familiar witch lore, opting instead to build an original mythology and unique magical system. Veerasunthorn emphasized the film’s fresh take on how characters cast spells and inhabit their magical world. Producer Yvett Merino highlighted the challenge of crafting a new intellectual property that stands out amid a crowded market of established franchises. She stressed the importance of making both the characters and the setting distinctive in order to capture audience interest.
Despite these hurdles, Merino expressed confidence that viewers will resonate with Billie’s dual journey of self-discovery and familial reconnection. The film’s original narrative approach aims to blend fantasy elements with relatable emotional themes as it seeks to introduce a new story within Disney’s animated portfolio.
