Novak Djokovic secured a victory in the first round of the China Open, ending a three-match losing streak. The former world No. 1 defeated Nuno Borges with a score of 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) in Beijing, marking his first win since Wimbledon. This match came after Djokovic’s surprising first-round exit at the US Open, his earliest departure from a Grand Slam in two decades.
Djokovic appeared to face physical challenges during the match, calling for treatment in the second set due to apparent stomach and breathing difficulties. Despite these issues, he maintained his strong performance in the tiebreak to close out the match. The victory also extended his unbeaten record at the China Open to 30 wins without a loss, a tournament he has won six times previously.
In the women’s draw, British player Katie Boulter opened her campaign with a straight-sets win over Japanese qualifier Mai Hontama, winning 6-3, 6-4. Both players will look to build on these early successes as the tournament progresses in Beijing.
