Novak Djokovic has praised Serena Williams as “truly inspirational” ahead of her highly anticipated return to Wimbledon later this month. The seven-time singles champion at the All England Club expressed admiration for Williams’ determination and the effort she has invested in her comeback.

Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam singles winner in the Open era, will compete at Wimbledon for the first time in four years after receiving a wild card entry into the main draw. The 44-year-old, who is a mother of two, is also scheduled to partner with her older sister Venus Williams, herself a five-time Wimbledon singles champion, in the women’s doubles event.

Djokovic, who has claimed seven Wimbledon singles titles, described Williams’ return to the sport as “epic” and “remarkable.” He noted the challenges she has overcome, including a lengthy absence from competitive tennis and balancing motherhood with her athletic ambitions.

“For her to come back after years of being absent from the tour, two children later, and to give so much effort… to give all of us a pleasure of seeing her back on the court is remarkable,” Djokovic said. “Whatever happens, what she’s doing is truly inspirational for me personally – I’m sure for millions around the world.”

Williams is set to face Australian Maya Joint, ranked 53rd globally, in the tournament’s opening round. In doubles, the Williams sisters will meet the Colombian-Argentinian pair Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra.

Djokovic also highlighted Williams’ dedication to training, remarking that he sees her in the gym more frequently than during her peak competitive years. “It tells me that she really wants this to work out the best way possible. It’s admirable, honestly, the effort she’s putting in,” he said.

He concluded by acknowledging the lasting legacy Williams has created in tennis, describing her career as “historical” and “legendary,” and expressing hope that she will enjoy the experience of returning to competition. “She deserves every applause she’s going to get,” Djokovic added.

The upcoming Wimbledon tournament will provide a platform to witness whether Williams can translate her rigorous preparations into on-court success in her return to professional tennis.
